We had these orphans as guests for Christmas, and they had put on a little show for us. I could tell that they were all very interested in what was going on on the flight line (we called it the "north forty"), so I asked Capt Medeiros, or someone standing with him, if there was any possibility we could take them up for a ride. The best I can remember, Capt Mike made it happen, and was the one who actually flew us on a short "test hover". He said that it was against regulations for civilians to fly with us, but he said that nothing was said about "hovering"! So, I think somebody bent the rules just a little, but the kids got to go on the ride of their lives, and Mike Templeton and I went along with them. There may have been two or three other GIs along, but mostly we were loaded up with about 20-30 kids!
